Maha Saptami Of Durga Puja: The Worship Of Maa Kalratri

Maha Saptami marks the true beginning of Durga Puja. On this seventh day, Maa Durga is invoked formally on earth, accompanied by her children, to bless devotees and establish dharma over adharma. Spiritually, it represents the descent of divine energy that clears away darkness and awakens inner strength.

On this day, Maa Kalaratri, the fierce form of Durga who destroys ignorance and negativity, is worshipped. She is the embodiment of fearlessness and grants courage, peace, and protection to devotees.

The rituals of Maha Saptami unite communities in prayer, anjali, and bhog, while reinforcing the values of purity, devotion, and service.

Maha Saptami Rituals and Traditions

  1. Bodhan and Adhivasan – The ceremonial awakening of Maa Durga, symbolising her arrival into the idol and space of worship.
  2. Nabapatrika Snan and Idon Installation – A sacred bundle of nine plants (banana, turmeric, pomegranate, bel, arum, paddy, jayanti, ashok, and colocasia) is bathed and placed beside the idol. This represents nature as an embodiment of the goddess.
  3. Mahasnan and Pran Pratishtha – Ritual bathing and consecration of the idol with Vedic mantras.
  4. Anjali and Bhog – Devotees offer flowers and sattvik bhog (khichuri, labra, fruits, and sweets), strengthening the bond of devotion and community sharing.
  5. Chanting and Music – Continuous recitation of hymns, beating of the dhak, and lighting of lamps create an atmosphere charged with energy and surrender.

Maha Saptami Mantras and Chantings

For Maa Kalaratri (worshipped on Saptami):

“Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah”

“Ya Devi Sarva Bhuteshu Kalaratri Rupena Samsthita, Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah.”

Recitation of the Durga Saptashati or Devi Mahatmya is considered essential.

For Community Worship:

“Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche”

(for invoking the goddess’s cosmic energy).

Collective chanting of the “Mahishasuramardini Stotra” builds unity and spiritual focus.

  5. Maintain humility, discipline, and respect toward family, elders, and fellow devotees.

What to Avoid (Don’ts)

  1. Do not consume non-vegetarian food, onion, garlic, or intoxicants.
  2. Avoid anger, arguments, and gossip, as they disturb the sanctity of worship.
  3. Do not cut nails, shave, or indulge in worldly distractions during puja days.
  4. If an Akhand Jyoti (eternal lamp) is lit, never leave the house unattended.
  5. Avoid neglecting the rituals or missing anjali, as it is believed to weaken the spiritual connection.
