Theyyam often referred to as Kaliyattam, is a well-known form of spiritual dance in the Southern Indian region. It combines music, mime, and dance.

According to popular belief, Theyyam is a folk art that praises the heritage and essence of ancient cultures and is still recently performed on important occasions.

The uniqueness of Kuttikkol Thampuratty Theyyam

The Kuttikkol Thampuratty Theyyam is one such celebration, which takes place in the Kuttikkol temple in North Malabar. This annual event lasts about 10 days, from February 22 through February 26. Being one of Kerala’s best-known festivals, this one features various principal Theyyam styles, including Elayor Theyyam, Chamundi Theyyam, Panchoorla Theyyam, Muthor Theyyam, etc.

The respected performers dress for the performance in vibrant orange outfits, complete with dramatic makeup and headpieces. The artists dance while reciting legends about the god and other mythical figures as the drums roll gets intense.

The religious belief around Kuttikkol Thampuratty Theyyam

The magical energies of gods and goddesses mix with the performers as the drumbeats become more fierce. They connect with the divine within their bodies while they are in a state of daze.

The performer dances (or leaps into the flames) under the influence and blesses the devotees. At some point, they eventually perform some miracles. When the artist awakens from the intense trance, they cannot recall the possession details. Pilgrims from across the world come to the Kuttikkol temple to experience the unmatched grandeur of this festivity.
