The Sandhya Arghya is one of the most sacred moments of Chhath Puja, performed on the third evening of the four-day festival. It is the time when devotees offer their prayers to the setting Sun (Surya Dev), thanking him for sustaining life on earth and seeking peace, prosperity, and good health.
The Ritual and Preparation
On this day, devotees known as Vrattis begin a 36-hour fast without food or water, showing complete dedication to Surya Dev and Chhathi Maiya. Offerings like Thekua, fruits, coconuts, sugarcane, and rice are placed in bamboo soops (Dauris). A Kosi canopy made of sugarcane stalks is set up, representing the five natural elements — earth, water, fire, air, and space.
The Evening Offering
As the sun begins to set, devotees walk to nearby rivers, ponds, or lakes carrying baskets of offerings on their heads. Dressed in traditional attire, they stand waist-deep in water facing the Sun.
The Sandhya Arghya is offered by pouring water and milk from small vessels while chanting prayers to Surya Dev. Diyas (earthen lamps) float on the water, spreading light and symbolizing purity and spiritual awakening.
The Spiritual Meaning
The setting Sun represents humility and gratitude. Offering Arghya at this time teaches us to honor endings, accept change, and remain thankful for what we have. It is believed that Surya Dev, along with Pratyusha Devi, blesses devotees with renewed strength, happiness, and protection.
Performing Sandhya Arghya connects the mind, body, and nature in one rhythm of devotion.
