Navratri is one of the most auspicious festivals in Hinduism, dedicated to the worship of the nine forms of Goddess Durga, the Mother Goddess. The first day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Shailaputri.

Shailaputri: The Manifestation of Divine Power

Shailaputri, also known as Goddess Parvati, is believed to be the first embodiment of Goddess Durga. The name ‘Shailaputri’ translates to ‘daughter of the mountains,’ signifying her birth as the daughter of the King of Mountains, Himalaya. She is depicted as a serene goddess, riding a bull and holding a trident and a lotus in her hands.

According to ancient scriptures, she took birth to get married to Lord Shiva, eventually becoming his consort and the mother of Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya.

Shailaputri is the embodiment of divine feminine energy and strength. She is also known as the goddess of the Muladhara chakra, the root chakra.

To seek the blessings and grace of Shailaputri, devotees follow a specific Puja Vidhi (ritualistic worship) on the first day of Navratri. Here is a brief outline of the puja procedure:

  1. Sankalp: Begin by taking a sankalp (a solemn vow) to worship Shailaputri with utmost devotion and dedication.
  2. Ganesh Puja: Start by invoking Lord Ganesha and seeking his blessings for the successful completion of the puja.
  3. Kalash Sthapana: Install a clay pot or Kalash filled with water and adorned with flowers and rice grains, symbolizing the divine presence of Shailaputri.
  4. Devi Puja: Offer flowers, incense, and vermillion to the deity image or idol of Shailaputri. Chant her sacred mantras and recite prayers with deep devotion.
  5. Aarti: Conclude the puja by performing the aarti, waving a lit lamp in front of the goddess and singing devotional hymns in praise of Shailaputri. Chant the mantra 108 times
