Bahuda Yatra is the homecoming of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra to their main temple in Puri. After staying at the Gundicha Temple for a few days, the deities begin their return on beautifully decorated chariots.
Date of Bahuda Yatra 2025
In 2025, this sacred journey will take place on Saturday, July 5.
Spiritual Meaning of the Return
Bahuda means “return.” It is not just a physical movement but a spiritual one. The deities, having visited their birthplace, now come back to bless their devotees once more. This return is as grand as the first part of the Rath Yatra.
Celebrations and Chariot Pulling
The streets of Puri come alive again. Devotees gather in huge numbers. They pull the chariots of Nandighosa, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana with deep faith and excitement. Chanting, music, and joy fill the air. Many believe that witnessing the Bahuda Yatra brings peace and divine favor.
Suna Besha: The Golden Attire
Once the chariots reach the Jagannath Temple, the deities don’t go inside right away. They stay on their chariots for the Suna Besha ritual, where they are dressed in shimmering gold ornaments. This takes place the next day.
Niladri Bije: Re-entry into the Temple
Finally, two days later, the deities will re-enter the sanctum in a quiet and heartfelt ceremony known as Niladri Bije.
Bahuda Yatra is more than a return. It marks the completion of a sacred cycle, reminding us that every journey has a beginning, a pause, and a homecoming. For those who witness it, the memory stays for a lifetime. For many, it is a chance to reconnect with faith, tradition, and something far greater than themselves.
