Upanayana is the ancient Hindu Sanskar (sacraments), followed from the Vedic period. Also known as Poita /Yagnopavita /Janai /Janeau in different Hindu communities. It’s a ritual of receiving a white sacred thread and wear it from left shoulder to right shoulder, crossing the chest. 

Significance of Upanayana Ceremony:

In Vedic times, this sacrament used to be followed by all caste, which is now only restricted and observed by Brahmins. According to Hinduism, the ceremony needs to perform within the age of 16. 

The Sanskrit word Upanayana stands as “the near vision” (Upa: Near; Nayan: Vision or the eye). Clearly, this ceremony is titled to facilitate the inner vision of an individual. 

Upanayana & Vedic Culture:

Earlier, Upanayana was one mandatory tradition in Hinduism for the acceptance of the student by Guru and the key of entrance in schools. Etymologically, it’s the protocol by which a guru leads the student towards knowledge and inducts his second birth by open up his young mind and spirit. 

Importance of Upanayana Ceremony:

The importance of Upanayana Sanskara is to educate the mind with legitimate knowledge and prepare him to lead his future life accordingly. Though the right of observing Upanayana Sanskar is finite to boys, girls also have the liberty to perform the ceremony as well, as per Kurmapuranas.
