Maha Shivaratri is the Hindu festival that celebrated to honor the almighty Shiva as he is the savior of humankind and gods. This is the whole night celebration describing the name of the festival- “the great night of Shiva”.

Maha Shivaratri is mainly the marriage day of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Despite, some say, on this day, Lord Shiva performed Tandava– the divine dance.

In some Indian areas, unmarried ladies observe fasting throughout the day till midnight and pray to get a husband like Shiva. After midnight Maha Shivaratri puja is performed by chanting Shiva mantras and devotional songs, and ladies jointly attend the Maha Shivaratri Vrat Katha.

On this day, shiva linga is bathed in milk, water, and coconut water and decorated with flowers and Bael leaves (Bel Patra). As the auspicious celebration takes place on the 4th day of Hindu month Phalgun (February/March) on the new moon (Amavasya) during Krishna Paksha, so it’s called Shiv Chaturdashi.

Devotees visit Shiva temples on this day to pray and meditate. This day is to pay tribute to Shiva for being the creator, protector, and destructor. When it comes to Shiva adoration, Hindus worship Shiva with all devotion. Meanwhile, Maha Shivaratri is the symbol of love, unity, togetherness.
