Worship Chhathi Maiya In Chhath Puja To Invite Prosperity, Fertility, And Family Well-being

Chhathi Maiya, also known as Shashthi Devi or Usha, is the divine mother worshipped during Chhath Puja alongside Surya Dev (the Sun God). The festival celebrates the perfect balance between light and nurturing energy — where Surya sustains life, and Chhathi Maiya protects and nurtures it.

The Divine Origin of Chhathi Maiya

According to ancient scriptures like the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Chhathi Maiya is the sixth form of Prakriti (Mother Nature) — the creative energy responsible for sustaining life. She was created by Lord Brahma to protect children and bless couples longing for offspring. She is often shown riding a cat, holding a child in her arms, symbolising care, courage, and compassion.

A popular legend tells of King Priyavrata and Queen Malini, who were childless. After years of prayer, Queen Malini gave birth to a stillborn child. Overcome with grief, she prayed to the divine. Chhathi Maiya appeared and blessed them, bringing the child back to life. From that moment, the King and Queen began worshipping her, and the ritual became known as Chhath Puja.

Her Connection with Chhath Puja

Chhathi Maiya is believed to be the sister of Surya Dev, and her worship forms the heart of Chhath Puja. Devotees, especially women, observe a strict fast and offer Sandhya Arghya (evening offering) and Usha Arghya (morning offering) to Surya and Chhathi Maiya. They pray for children’s good health, family happiness, and prosperity.

Symbolism and Blessings

By worshipping Chhathi Maiya, devotees seek fertility, prosperity, and emotional strength. Her blessings are believed to protect children from harm and bring peace to families. The ritual also promotes ecological harmony, honouring nature as a living force. In essence, Chhathi Maiya’s worship during Chhath Puja celebrates life, motherhood, and the eternal connection between nature, family, and divine light.

Offer your prayers to Chhathi Maiya this Chhath Puja and welcome blessings of life, strength, and abundance into your home.
