Lit Yama Deepam On Dhantrayodashi To Keep Fear Of Death At A-Bay!

Yama Deepam is a traditional practice followed in Hindu households on the day of Dhantrayodashi. It falls on the 13th day of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Ashwin. According to belief, lighting a lamp, also known as Yama Deep, on this day can help ward off the fear of death and bring prosperity and good luck to the household.

Significance of Yama Deepam

Performing Yama Deepam is considered highly auspicious that brings blessings from Yama, the god of death. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Yama or Yamraj visits his devotees on this day to bless them with good health and long life. Hence, lighting a lamp guides Lord Yama to the devotee’s home and eliminates the fear of death.

Directions To Place Yama Deepam?

Traditionally, Yama Deepam is placed in the southwest way of the residence, as this is the correct direction associated with Lord Yama. It’s usually a clay lamp, and people use ghee as the fuel. Then, they put a wick made of cotton in the ghee and lit the lamp using a matchstick or a lighter.

It’s essential to keep the lamp burning throughout the night, and as per faith, the longer the lamp burns, the more blessings one receives. Some people also place a few grains of rice and turmeric around the lamp as an offering to Lord Yama.
