A Past Life of Righteousness

According to some versions of the Ramayana, Vibhishana was not always Ravana’s brother. In his past life, he was Satyavrat, a pious king who was known for his justice and devotion to the gods. When Ravana’s sister, Surpanakha, approached Satyavrat with a marriage proposal, he rejected her advances due to her wicked nature.

Enraged by his rejection, Surpanakha falsely accused Satyavrat of assault, leading to his unjust execution. However, due to his virtuous deeds, Satyavrat was reborn as Vibhishana, the younger brother of Ravana.

When Ram arrived in Lanka seeking his wife Sita, who had been abducted by Ravana, Vibhishana saw an opportunity to fulfill his dharma. He defected to Ram’s side, offering valuable advice and assistance throughout the war.

The Importance of Vibhishana’s Choice

Vibhishana’s decision to side with Ram was not an easy one. He was betraying his own family and risking the wrath of his powerful brother. However, his choice ultimately played a pivotal role in Ram’s victory. Vibhishana’s knowledge of Lanka’s defenses and insights into Ravana’s character proved invaluable to Ram’s army.
